Mayho claims cup hat-trick

Dominating display: Mayho finished 1½ minutes clear

Dominique Mayho claimed his third Presidents Cup title after another dominating performance in yesterday’s race from Dockyard to Paget.

Mayho returned from Belgium where he competes for amateur team Jonge Rikkers Vollezelle to take part in the 65-mile race — the Bermuda Bicycle Association’s longest road race of the year.

The 22-year-old dominated from start to finish, first drawing out three of his competitors, Matthew Oliveira, Kaden Hopkins and David McComas, into a lead breakaway before driving each to their limit.

As they hit Scaur Hill, Mayho outpaced McComas and then Hopkins leaving Oliveira safely on the leader’s wheel.

But misfortune struck for the 16-year-old as he suffered a puncture by White Hill Field and was not able to rejoin the race.

Mayho finished ahead of Hopkins by 1½ minutes with McComas a further two minutes back.

Teenager Alyssa Rowse won the women’s race, finishing eleventh overall and about five seconds ahead of Karen Smith.

Hopkins took the junior title ahead of Conor White.
