Medal haul for women’s cyclists in Gotland

The Bermuda women’s cycling team won a silver medal in the road race at the NatWest Island Games in Gotland, Sweden, yesterday.

Gabriella Arnold, Nicole Mitchell, Alyssa Rowse and Zoenique Williams helped Bermuda to a second-placed finish in the team event behind the Isle of Man. Guernsey came third.

Williams also won silver in the individual road race, with Mitchell completing the podium in third. Rowse came sixth.

Dominique Mayo, the island’s top cyclist, was Bermuda’s highest finisher in the men’s individual road race, finishing sixth. Matthew Oliveira placed thirteenth.

Bermuda’s gymnasts added to their medal haul yesterday after Anna Francoeur claimed bronze in the overall individual final. Gianna Shannen Webbe placed fourth in the floor and fifth in the vault semi-finals. The island’s gymnasts won five medals on Monday.

After round two of the men’s team golf event, Bermuda’s foursome of James Campbell, Jarryd Dillas, Will Haddrell and Mark Phillips are fifth after shooting a combined total of 468. In the individual event, Haddrell is seventh after round two with a total of 149 and Dillas is sixteenth (155).

After two rounds of the ladies individual golf competition, Elizabeth Parson is joint sixth with a total of 168, Tariqah Walikraam is eleventh (173) while Katrin Burnie is sixteenth (178).

In the men’s singles tennis round of 16, Gavin Manders lost 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 to Menorca’s Miguel Alberti Fuster, while David Thomas lost to Jersey’s Stuart Parker 1-6, 1-6.

Manders and Thomas teamed up for the men’s doubles, defeating Gibraltar’s Jeremy Poggio and James Taylor 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16, while Jovan Jordan-Whitter and Sam Butler beat Bjorn Carlnas and Karl Lindberg, of Gotland, 7-6, 6-2.

In the senior plate quarter-finals, Butler defeated Regan Matthews, of the Isle of Wight, 6-4, 6-2, while in the junior plate quarters, Jordan-Whitter beat Michael Foulkes, of the Isle of Wight, 6-4, 6-4. In badminton, Bermuda’s Rowena Cespedes and Darelyn Legaspi lost 21-3, 21-5 to Guernsey’s Elena Johnson and Chloe Le Tissier.

The Bermuda women’s volleyball team are third in group B after losing 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 13-25, 15-13 to Aland.

Archer Tiffany Slaton, who won a silver in the mixed recurve head-to-head team knockout competition on Tuesday, beat Fiona Falla, of Guernsey, 6-0 in round of 32 in the women’s 32 competition.
