Drink driver banned after high-speed chase

A 26-year-old Hamilton man was banned from the roads for 18 months yesterday for drink driving and leading police on a high-speed chase.

The court heard how Sean Burchall was in the area of Crow Lane roundabout near Hamilton when he was caught by a police speed checkpoint.

Officers clocked Burchall’s bike at 66km/h — almost twice the speed limit — and tried to pull him over. But Burchall took off and led them on a high-speed chase where he just avoided crashes before he was stopped.

Burchall was later found to have 92mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

The offence happened on March 10, 2015.

Burchall denied the offence that year and a date was set for trial — but he never showed up.

His offence caught up with him yesterday and he changed his plea to guilty. Burchall told magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that he had turned his life around and now had a job in landscaping.

Mr Tokunbo fined Burchall $1,200 in addition to the ban.
