Shoppers at hardware store Gorham’s will get road safety advice thanks to a new 20 feet- high wall display designed to highlight The Royal Gazette’s Drive for Change campaign.

The display at the entrance to the Pembroke store, unveiled yesterday, warns its customers not to text and drive and includes two films on the launch of Drive for Change at East Broadway back in January.

Rod Farrington, senior manager at the store, said: “We call this ‘the wall’ and over the last two years that we have had this we noticed it definitely gets a lot of attention.

“People stop and look at it and the films are not too long so they can watch them.”

Mr Farrington added: “Our feedback watching our own employees showing interest in what we are doing was very encouraging.

“Every five weeks in numbers we have the population of Bermuda come through our doors and it amazes me when we first put it up how many people stopped and looked at it.

“There are several places in the store where people can be exposed to it. On our regular TVs and videos it has the same banner. It is really all over the place. We have one in the lumber area where all the contractors are.”

The wall was created by Gorham’s own marketing team using design elements created by The Royal Gazette’s Terrina Nolan.

Posters have also been placed around the store to help remind the public to drive safely.

Gorham’s signed up as main sponsor for the campaign last month.

Drive for Change is campaigning for effective use of just-legalised roadside breath test checkpoints, speed cameras and a mandatory graduated licensing programme for bike riders, including on-road training.

A spokeswoman for Drive for Change said: “To have this space in Bermuda’s busiest homewares store means that thousands of people will become aware of the campaign.

“We encourage all who view it to take note of the website address and social media handles and jump on board the effort.”
