The message of road safety resonated with hundreds of people who passed through Gorham’s during its Home Fair on Saturday.

Drive for Change hosted a table to invite people to learn about campaign’s objectives and showing them how to offer support through advocacy and endorsement.

Members of the public signed a pledge sheet promising to drive safely while others offered their contact information so that they could get involved in future campaign projects.

Those who posed for a picture next to the stall and who agreed to advocate were given free T-shirts, key rings, bumper stickers and information sheets.

Drive for Change and its campaign partners, A Piece of the Rock, advocated successfully for the introduction of roadside sobriety checkpoints, which were used for the first time last month.

The campaign’s other objectives are the introduction of speed cameras and proper training for new riders, while it will keep up the pressure for the continuation of sobriety checkpoints.

The campaign had a petition in support of the three measures which was separated from the promotional activity, members of the public did not have to sign the petition in order to receive goods.

Dozens of people signed the petition on the day, bringing the total to 334 including 104 physicians.

In addition, nearly 100 people signed pledge sheets to be safe drivers, meaning they will help advocate for the campaign.

Anyone wishing to sign in favour of the Drive for Change objectives can do so by visiting The Royal Gazette offices at 2 Par-la-Ville Road, or by signing an online petition which will be available in the coming days.

A spokeswoman for Drive for Change said: “Thanks to the popularity of our campaign’s title sponsor Gorham’s, Drive for Change has reached a massive audience.

“It was heartening to hear so many people speak in support of what we are doing to try to improve the standards of road safety on the island.

“It is clearly a message that hits home.”
