High-speed chase rider banned for a year

A man who tried to dodge a roadside breath test checkpoint was banned from the roads for a year yesterday.

Jarico Burt, 23, led police on a high-speed chase through Hamilton after he failed to stop at a checkpoint near the junction of Reid Street and Queen Street in the early hours of November 24, Magistrates’ Court heard.

Prosecutors said officers saw Burt speed the wrong way down one-way streets and ignore red lights before he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a kerb near Bull’s Head Car park.

Burt, from Hamilton Parish, tried to run away, but was arrested on Dundonald Street.

Officers suspected Burt had been drinking, but he refused to take a breath test.

Burt pleaded guilty to refusing to take a breath test.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined Burt $800 in addition to the driving ban.
