Scott to host online education forum

Answering questions: Wayne Scott, the Minister of Education

Wayne Scott, Minister of Education, will be available to answer questions surrounding Bermuda’s education system in a live online forum this evening.

The discussion will cover wideranging topics concerning education including the School Reorganisation Plan, the Score report, the Middle School Transformation Plan, the Careers Pathways Programme, and the curriculum or Cambridge Elementary School Checkpoint results.

The discussion will take place via the One Bermuda Alliance’s public Facebook page from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

The Ministry of Education has not yet confirmed whether there would be any further public consultation meetings, in particular as it relates to the Score report which could see some public primary schools closed or amalgamated.

The report, released by the Ministry in February, highlighted widespread health and safety concerns across the public primary school system including rat infestations and mould.

Mr Scott sent a letter to all primary school parents, teachers and principals last week underscoring the ministry’s “commitment to address infrastructure problems in public schools”.

He wrote: “Following consultation with school principals, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Works have developed a maintenance works schedule to address the most urgent concerns.

Areas concerning safety and health have been identified as a first priority. Some work has already begun and more will continue during the summer break.

“In order for parents and staff to be provided more information on our improvement efforts, the Acting Commissioner of Education has requested that all principals share with their PTAs, Parent Councils and staff all of the problem areas identified within schools and the schedule for repair and maintenance.

“I again wish to thank all students, parents, PTAs, parent councils, primary school alumni, department and school staff, retired educators, unions, community organisations and other interested community members who participated in the school reorganisation consultation.

“Your contributions are valued and are an important part of this process. I have received over 60 formal written submissions, in addition to the numerous verbal and written submissions obtained at each of the public consultation meetings. At this time each submission is being carefully reviewed and considered. This phase of the process is expected to be completed in the upcoming weeks.”
