Great experience: students were allowed the privilege of a week on board the Spirit of Bermuda thanks to a $6,600 donation

A shipping line’s generosity has helped 20 students enjoy a week of thrills on the high seas on board the Spirit of Bermuda.

Bermuda Container Line donated more than $6,600 to Saltus Grammar School that allowed pupils to experience a weeklong adventure around the island in October.

The firm has now donated a matching sum to the same school to allow a further group of students to participate in the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s Youth at Sea learning programme.

Year 10 student Jaylen Simons, who benefited from last year’s donation, described his time on the Spiritas a “great experience”.

“I learnt how to trust others and myself with important tasks, how to be independent, and how to work really well in a group,” Jaylen said.

“We had a really fun time sailing five miles out from the coast of Bermuda and seeing the shore from afar, even though many were seasick, and I really loved staying up for night anchor-watch and seeing the stars.

“I would definitely recommend other students to go because it is an experience like no other.”

BCL chairman John Wight added: “We are pleased to continue BCL’s support of schools looking to involve their students in the Bermuda Sloop Foundation programme”.
