The hard work has paid off for 11 graduates of Care Learning Centre.

After taking on the notably difficult new computerised programme for the GED, Care’s graduates donned caps and gowns for a ceremony with their families and teachers.

Congratulating them and wishing good luck, George Fergusson, the Governor, praised the students for securing qualification that they had put “an enormous amount of work into”.

Michael Dunkley, the Premier, called on them “never to take no for an answer”, and education minister Wayne Scott commended them for “sticking to it and getting it done”.

A beaming Tyler Christopher took the academic achievement award in memory of Graham Steed, while Comori Matthew received a special recognition award dedicated to the late Shane Adderley.

Neletha Butterfield, director of the school, told graduates that their country needed their knowledge, experience and talents, adding: “Shine like a diamond, make your family and friends proud — but, most of all, shine brightly for yourself.”

Fitzgerald Williams, a social worker and 1990 Care graduate, recounted his own struggles through the traditional education system that left him with merely a certificate showing his attendance at high school.

Perseverance led him to the unnerving experience of flying alone to start at the University of Maryland with just $50 in his wallet — ultimately becoming the first in his family to graduate from university, which changed life for his siblings as well.

“Become trailblazers,” Mr Williams told the gathering, which closed with graduates shifting over the tassels on their caps to signify the completion of their studies.

Also graduating were Ashley Aguiar, Hubert Butterfield, Jahson Dallas, Shamairah Darrell, Tamairah Darrell, Malaysia DeRosa, Brittney Moniz, Daelen Powell and L. Dillon Smith.
