Four Sandys students have been awarded a total of $10,000 through the Sandys Parish Council’s Education Bursary Award 2016.

Keri Brangman, Khaeljah Burgess, Norianna Gordon and Cyrelah Somner received varying amounts at a special ceremony at Sandys Secondary Middle School on Monday.

“We wish we could afford to award financial support to more applicants, as the need and demand was reflected in their submissions for all 15 applicants,” council chairwoman Tonetta Spring stated. Financial support was awarded to students who demonstrated financial need, scholarly aptitude, community involvement and roles of leadership. According to the council, the recipients’ programmes of study were diverse in nature and reflected future needs and trends indicated by industry standards.

Ms Brangman is pursuing an associate degree programme in surgical technology at New England Institute of Technology in Rhode Island, while Ms Burgess is studying for a bachelor’s degree in forensic psychology at Nottingham Trent University in England. Ms Gordon is working to obtain a bachelor’s degree in finance at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Ms Somner a PhD in clinical psychology at Walden University in Minnesota.

“The Council wishes these students continued success in their studies and looks forward to the opportunity to engage them in activities and community programmes upon their return to give back in the form of community service to the Sandys Parish Council.”
