The school and family of the late Dennikia Lambert were given an honorary bursary and necklaces in her memory during a tearful ceremony held by Rosa’s Cantina and Gosling’s yesterday.

At the ceremony, held at the restaurant, Berkeley vice-principal Quincy Paynter donated a $7,137 cheque to the Golden Angel scholarship.

Dennikia’s mother Dawnette Smith and her 13-year-old daughter Dennika were surprised when they were given necklaces and pendants spelling “Dennikia” donated by E.R. Aubrey.

“Apparently my mother and brother knew [about the necklaces] and they kept it from us,” said Ms Smith.

“They pretty much knew that I was either going to refuse it later or cry.”

Fourteen-year-old Dennikia died in a road accident last summer, prompting Rosa’s and Gosling’s to create the Golden Angel scholarship by selling cupcakes and “golden angel” cocktails throughout July.

“We figured it would be nice to send somebody to school in her honour,” said Rosa’s manager Lindsay Durham.

“We wanted to do everything we could, but we couldn’t have done this without the help of Gosling’s and E.R. Aubrey, and just the community in general.”

Mr Paynter expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and said that it reflected Dennikia’s generosity.

“When I think about Dennikia, I think of her as awesome academically — but she had a spirit of giving and she would often give back to those students who were less fortunate or needed assistance in academics,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“I see that Rosa’s has that same spirit of giving, and it’s now it’s coming into fruition with this Dennikia scholarship.”

The fundraiser is planned to continue throughout May for the next two years before being presented to a member of her graduating Class of 2019 in June.

Mr Paynter and Ms Smith will meet with Gosling’s and Ms Durham to choose the best applicants based on their academic performance, artistic contributions and generosity.
