Middle school students joining the Power of One youth leadership programme got a pep talk from Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works.

The programme, which is the brainchild of footballer brothers Andrew and David Bascome, teaches life skills and character building to young students.

Colonel Burch attended a special assembly to congratulated students at TN Tatem Middle School’s Power Student Council on Wednesday.

The students will serve as “representatives of excellent leadership”, he said.

He added: “I am certain you will also develop into top scholars academically, social leaders and positive role models for your peers.”

Colonel Burch called himself the school’s “landlord” in his role as public works minister, and told students work would commence soon on putting one of the school’s buildings back in service.

The assembly included a ceremony giving out Power Student pins to the youth council.

Colonel Burch said: “This is the start of your leadership journey to one day sitting at the Cabinet table or being the Premier of this country — you are laying the foundation now for whatever you decide to do in your life.”
