Mount Saint Agnes Academy has scooped the top prize in an art competition designed to brighten up a construction site in the heart of Hamilton.Pupils at the school, on the Dundonald Street, claimed the $5,000 top prize from the Point House school mural project with their mural of an island beach scene.The work, alongside other entrants, was created on wooden hoardings at Albuoy’s Point.The MSA pupils, inspired by the pop art style of Keith Haring, featured a wide range of Bermudian symbols, including a kite, a longtail and Gombeys.All middle school-age pupils on the island were invited to take part in the contest, which had the theme “My Bermuda”, organised by the Green family, owners of Point House, a former HSBC building on Front Street being converted to offices and stores, and the Bermuda National Gallery.Bermuda High School and the Bermuda Institute won $3,000 each for second place.Sandys Secondary Middle School and Somersfield Academy took third place and a prize of $2,000 each.All schools that took part got a donation of $1,000 from the Green family, in addition to any prize money.Other schools that took part were the Bermuda Centre for Creative Learning, Clearwater Middle School, Saltus Grammar School, Warwick Academy and Whitney Institute Middle School.The murals have been installed around Point House and will remain in place for the duration of construction. Alexander Green, on behalf of the Green family, said: “We were incredibly impressed with the quality of artwork that was created by all of the students who took part — the murals will really brighten the space around Point House.“We are so pleased to have been able to give these talented students a space to showcase their talents and we hope that they continue to be passionate about art.”Peter Lapsley, the director at the BNG, said: “The art competition was a great experience for everyone involved and we were thrilled to see how enthusiastic the students were about their murals.“We are grateful to the Green family for their tremendous support of the arts and arts education in Bermuda.”Companies that supported the project included Pembroke Paint, Bermuda Rentals, D&J Construction, St George’s and West End Mini Bus Service and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.
