Pupils will not be expected to learn from home tomorrow, the Commissioner of Education said. Kalmar Richards said that April 24 was normally set aside for pupils in the Bermuda Agricultural Show. She added in a letter to parents: “It is also recognised in the collective bargaining agreement between the Department of Education and the Bermuda Union of Teachers that staff are not required to work on this day. “Therefore, although the Covid-19 crisis has forced a cancellation of the Annual Agricultural Exhibition, Friday remains a no school day for students and staff alike.” However Ms Richards encouraged parents to have their children take part in some sort of online learning or in some type of activity promoted by the annual fair, such as baking, drawing or tending to plants and animals. She also recommended that pupils take pictures of how they were to spend the day and share them with family and friends. Ms Richards also used the letter to thank the parents who had taken part in the internet and technology survey. She said: “The results will be shared after careful analysis to determine our capacities and needs, so we can best assist our students.” Ms Richards added that parents could contact teachers and principals directly about any “questions, suggestions, kudos and complaints”.
