Eric West will represent Bermuda in the World Amateur Team Championships 14 years after his last appearance.

The former touring professional regained his amateur status in May, and has been named in the Bermuda team to compete in the Eisenhower Trophy in Mexico in September.

His third-place finish at the Bermuda Stroke Play Championships was enough to earn him a spot in the side alongside Jarryd Dillas and Mark Phillips for the tournament in Riviera Maya.

Dillas will be making his seventh appearance for Bermuda at the tournament after being winning this year’s order of merit. The island’s top amateur golfer also finished in the top three in all but one of his 12 BGA events this past season, including claiming a fifth Bermuda Amateur Match Play title in March.

Phillips, meanwhile, makes the team for the second time. A former two-time winner of the Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play, Phillips recorded nine top three finishes from his ten BGA starts this season, and ended the year as runner-up in the order of merit.

The last time West made the squad was when he represented Bermuda in Puerto Rico in 2004.

“Representing your country is always a proud moment, and I have no doubt that Jarryd, Mark, and Eric will do Bermuda proud and be great ambassadors for the island,” Craig Brown, the Bermuda Golf Association president, said.

“There were a few players who withdrew themselves from consideration for selection because of work and school commitments, so to be able to name such a strong team is a clear indication of the depth of golf talent on the island.

“I’m confident all three will give a good account of themselves in September.”

The championships were last played in 2014 in Karuizawa, Japan, with the United States winning the Eisenhower Trophy for a record fifteenth time, and the Bermuda trio of Dillas, Phillips and William Haddrell finishing 45th.
