Marc-Etienne Bussieres and Dave Levesque held their nerve on the final hole of the Nike Golf PGA Team Championships of Canada to pocket $12,000 of the $90,000 total prize money.

The Quebec pair finished with a 15-foot birdie putt on the deciding hole at Mid Ocean Club to separate themselves from a logjam of four other teams all finishing one shot behind at 19-under par.

Featuring different team formats for each day — fourball, foursomes and scramble — the title was still very much up for grabs when Levesque kept his cool to wrap up a thrilling win.

“I was really trying to focus on my breathing standing over that last putt and not think about winning the trophy,” said Levesque, whose putt vaulted the pair to 20-under.

“I knew what had to be done because I’m a leaderboard watcher and I knew exactly what was happening with all these teams stacked up.”

Bussieres and Levesque said they both learnt from their mistakes during last year’s competition and had a far better feel of the course this time around.

“We’ve been in good sync together this year,” Bussieres, 30, said. “Each partner has their strengths and weakness but we fill in the gaps pretty well — that was the key to our success.

“We kept the lead pretty much from the start and had a nice eagle at no 11 that gave us a pretty good cushion with a lead of three.

“There were a lot of teams tied at 19 under and it took all the way through to the last hole to win it. It was a tough battle out there.”

Levesque, 42, said the pair planned to return to the island next year to defend their title.

“On paper we have a great team but last year was our first time playing the event on this course and we didn’t play as well as we were hoping to,” he said.

“We had some good knowledge from last year and we knew what to improve upon.”

The championship featured more than 50 two-men teams of PGA of Canada professionals, with Levesque praising the unique format of the competition.

“The beauty of this event is the format,” said Levesque, who has played on the island on several occasions including the Grey Goose World Par 3 Championship.

“You get teams contending this week you don’t usually see, plus you have powerhouse teams too and everyone is just making lots of birdies to keep things exciting.”

He added: “I love the island. It’s a great golf destination and there are some great courses with Port Royal, Turtle Hill at Fairmont and Belmont Hills.”

With the win, Bussieres became a two-times PGA of Canada winner in 2016, his first coming in June at the Victoria Golf Club in British Columbia for the PGA Championship of Canada.

“This win is really special because Bermuda is such a wonderful place and the fact that Mid Ocean Club has hosted us all week is just incredible,” Bussieres said.

“This golf course is spectacular and the food has been amazing all week too.”
