The world-renowned Port Royal Golf Course will host the first of back-to-back Bermuda Golf Association events starting tomorrow.

The Southampton layout will stage the BGA Team Challenge, which is a four-player event using the Stableford format with two balls to count.

The event has proven very popular among locals and usually attracts more than 100 players.

Action then continues at Port Royal, which will host the Bermuda Match Play Amateur Championships for the first time in many years from October 5 to 7.

The duration of the event, traditionally played at the Mid Ocean Club, has also been condensed into three days, with the qualifying round to be held on the Friday and the match play events on Saturday and Sunday. The final will be over 18 holes.

Organisers are hoping that the reduced duration of the event will attract a wider range of golfers.

The 6,842-yard Port Royal layout was designed by Robert Trent Jones and is ranked among the world’s best public golf courses by Golf Digest and named Bermuda’s finest course by The New York Times.

Earlier this year, CNN Sport named the venue’s signature 16th hole as one of the best par-threes in the world.

The breathtaking hole captures the imagination of all that play it, and has it been mentioned in the same breath by CNN Sport as the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, Florida, the 7th at Pebble Beach Golf Links and the 12th at Augusta National, home of the Masters.

Port Royal hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf for seven years between 2008 and 2014.

The event was first held in 2007 in Bermuda at Mid Ocean Club and features the winners of the four majors — the Masters, US Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship.

Meanwhile, the new BGA golf season officially commenced last Saturday with the Monthly Medal at Ocean View Golf Course.

Jarryd Dillas won the event by five shots over Mark Phillips.

Dillas fired a stellar six-under-par 64, which included eight birdies.

Tracy Nash won the women’s title in equally dominant fashion, carding a three-over 75 for a seven-shot triumph over Ann Symonds.

Dillas went into the tournament fresh off his record-tying appearance for Bermuda at the World Amateur Team Championships in Maynooth, Ireland, this month.

It was the 33-year-old’s eighth appearance at the tournament, drawing him level with Brendan Ingham, a Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame inductee, and Louis Moniz for the most appearances by a Bermudian at the event.

Bermuda finished in 50th position at the World Amateur Team Championships, which were won by Denmark with an overall score of 541, with United States second with 542 and Spain posting 544 for third.
