New par-3 event attracts overseas pros

Team leader: Mark Carnevale is a commentator for PGA Tour Radio and former Nationwide Tour player

PGA Tour winner Mark Carnevale is among the overseas professionals to compete in the inaugural Bermuda 3s World Team Championship presented by Goslings next week.

The former PGA Tour Rookie of the Year won the 1992 Chattanooga Classic at the Council Fire Golf and Country Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and also competed in the Masters, PGA Championship and US Open.

Carnevale has also competed on the Nationwide Tour, where he won the 1997 Nike Inland Empire Open, as well as the Champions Tour and now serves as a commentator for PGA Tour Radio.

He will lead one of the teams representing the United States in the pro-am event, which also includes amateurs Ford Schick, David Sunseri and Bruce Sandry.

Also leading one of the teams from the US is Michael Breed, the PGA Tour Radio host and top US golf instructor, who has helped promote the tournament this summer as an ambassador.

The former Sunningdale Country Club head professional hosted his Golf Channel show from Bermuda when the PGA Grand Slam of Golf was held on the island.

Breed has been a part of the broadcast team for Golf Channel’s coverage of the Nationwide Tour and PGA Tour serving as an on-course commentator since 1999. He also serves as the analyst for PGA.com in its coverage of the PGA Championship, PGA Professional National Championship and the Ryder Cup.

Breed, who was chosen as the PGA’s National Teacher of the Year in 2012, will lead the US team also including amateurs Brian Donahue, Austin DeLucia and Kerri Breed.

Bermuda will be represented by two teams led by professionals Dwayne Pearman and Daniel Augustus.

Pearman’s team will feature amateurs Craig Christensen, Christopher Morris and former premier Michael Dunkley. Malcolm Gosling, Max Atherden and Krister Hagnevik are the remaining amateur members on the team to be led by Augustus.

The Bermuda 3s World Team Championship is a new team par-3 tournament matching Pro-Am teams from Canada, the US, Britain, Ireland and continental Europe.

The event will be held at Mid Ocean Club, Port Royal Golf Course and Turtle Hill Golf Club from October 21 to 26.

The teams of one PGA professional and three amateurs will compete in a 36-hole qualifying tournament at Mid Ocean and Port Royal to determine the field for the main event at Turtle Hill.

As well as lead their respective teams, the PGA professionals will compete individually for a $100,000 purse.
