Solid display for Augustus in Orlando

Bermuda golfer Daniel Augustus

Daniel Augustus produced another solid display competing on the Open Golf America Tour in Orlando, Florida, last week.

The professional carded an impressive two-under-par 142 to finish tied at sixth in the 36-hole championship at the Greg Norman-designed ChampionsGate Golf Club.

Augustus shot an opening round three-under 69 and followed up with a one-over 73 in the second to finish three shots shy of the play-off for first, won by Nick Contini from Ohio.

“I thought it was a solid showing after a win, the first round especially,” Augustus said. “The first round was bogey free, even though I parred two of the easier par 5s on the front nine.

“The second round we started in windy and wet conditions. I got off to a really bad start. I was three over through four holes and managed to shoot plus one. The conditions were tough and the scores indicated that.”

The championship took place last Wednesday and Thursday, with the first round being played on the 7,128-yard National Course and the second on the longer 7,363-yard International Course. It featured a field of 27 professionals, who all had to qualify at a one-day qualifying tournament at the same venue last month.

Augustus went into the event with plenty of momentum, having achieved a maiden win on the Florida Elite Golf Tour nine days previously.

“I’m pleased but I also know there’s still work to be done,” he said. “I’m trying to become more consistent and play under-par golf in tournaments consistently.

“I don’t mean one or two under. I mean four or five under consistently and I’m getting there.”
