Testing is only a part of the battle – BHeC

Dynamic situation: Ricky Brathwaite

Another 400 Covid-19 test kits are expected to arrive on Tuesday, the Premier said yesterday. The news came after he announced two more positive tests, which took the number of Covid-19 cases to 17.Mr Burt said: “The Minister of Health has confirmed that an additional 400 testing kits will be shipping from the United States on Monday and should arrive here on Tuesday. He added that the Government is also working with Bermudian geneticist Carika Weldon on expanding our testing capacity. He said: “Her considerable experience and reach into the very areas of research that will benefit us at this time is expected to produce the assistance we need to increase our understanding during this pandemic.”Kim Wilson, the health minister, said the island had about 40 test kits available.Ricky Brathwaite, the Bermuda Health Council chief executive, explained later that tests were one part of a wider plan to combat the coronavirus. He said: “As everyone should appreciate, this is a dynamic situation and we all should be flexible to adjust as Covid-19 dictates.“I do know a lot of effort is being put into procurement, and some supplies are pending delivery. “However, just note that testing should not affect the caution that everyone should be taking, including the policies around self-isolation, quarantine, and social-distancing.”Dr Brathwaite explained: “Testing gives us a quantitative measure of risk, but the numbers should not create fear, but rather just reinforce the seriousness of what we have been told to do, which is to change the way that we are doing things, for the sake of everyone else around us. “Testing is part of a larger integrated strategy and while it is very important, it should not be looked at as something that is standing on its own or be seen as the singular cure for ending the Covid-19 pandemic threat.”Government figures showed at 3pm yesterday that 106 tests had returned clear results and 35 were pending.
