Greenslade inspires island to thrilling win

Thrilling finish: Bermuda beat Worcester Polytechnic Insitute 2-0

Renee Greenslade inspired the Bermuda field hockey team to a barnstorming finish, as they scored twice in the fourth quarter to beat Worcester Polytechnic Insitute 2-0 at the National Sports Centre yesterday.

Midfielder Greenslade was one of three Bermuda players to receive green cards — the others being Iman Smith and Azari Thomas — after some controversial umpiring decisions, but she responded by scoring the first goal and setting up the second as the home side channelled their anger in the best way possible.

After Greenslade’s card for obstruction, initial pressure from Smith led to Jasmine Patterson’s run into the shooting circle, which found a WPI foot. Greenslade then swept in Patterson’s hit from the resulting penalty corner.

Selina Whitter scored Bermuda’s second soon afterwards with a penalty stroke, forced after Greenslade’s shot was blocked by a foot on the goalline.

Bermuda had several other chances, with Asha Trott having a shot cleared off the line in the second quarter.

Bermuda ramped it up a notch in the second half, with Kascia White hitting a post early in the third quarter.

Tihanna Booth’s shot was then deflected wide before an effort from Alex Francis, off a hit into the circle from Smith, was well saved by WPI goalkeeper Emily Wilson.

Patterson shot wide early in the fourth quarter after good work in midfield from Isabella Boonstra. Patterson again forced a kick save from Wilson in the final two minutes after Bermuda’s goals.

Bermuda play their final game of this summer series against Shippensburg University on Saturday, which starts at 6pm at the National Sports Centre.
