Bermuda finish fourth
Puerto Rico 1 Bermuda 0
Bermuda finished fourth at the Central American and Caribbean Games qualifiers in Kingston, Jamaica after losing to a single goal in the third-fourth place play-off match on Sunday.
The game took a similar turn as Bermuda’s other defeats at the tournament, with plenty of possession and territory undone by conceding a goal from a penalty corner. Marisa Miro struck from a well-worked penalty corner for Puerto Rico’s winner.
Bermuda had the first chance of the contest off one of their own penalty corners early on. Keishae Robinson powered a shot towards goal and a rebound from LaKae Tavares, the inserter, was deflected over the Puerto Rico crossbar.
Bermuda had two more penalty corners in the opening stanza, and Maha Clarke came close to opening the scoring, but her dived effort was brilliantly kept out by Stephanie Garcia, the Puerto Rico goalkeeper.
Bermuda again look good in the second quarter with Alex Francis just failing to finish off an excellent move involving Chrysda Smith and Patterson. Puerto Rico pounced as a penalty corner was worked to the right, with Miro alone to get her shot off to give them the lead.
Puerto Rico took a leaf out of Bermuda’s book as they crowded their own shooting circle with defenders. Renee Greenslade and Patterson made runs into the circle, but were victims of great bunch defence.
Maya Palacio found a foot for a penalty corner for Bermuda’s last chance, but they could not take advantage as Puerto Rico sent their raucous crowd home happy.
