Bus service of ‘Third World’

Dear Sir,

When do you suppose the powers that be are going to do something about the atrocious bus service on this island?

Even the drivers, who are generally patient and courteous, are getting fed up with having to cope with inferior and inadequate equipment.

Not a single day goes by without at least one bus — and usually more — breaking down and leaving passengers stranded waiting for a replacement vehicle; and in the meantime buses are standing idle at the terminal “waiting for parts”.

Why? Why are they waiting for parts?

Why, when the Government is ordering buses, do they not order spare parts, which can be stored until needed?

The service between the Dockyard and points east is especially bad: at least twice a week, my own caregiver is left, along with many others, at the Somerset bus stop for as long as an hour, while buses crammed with visitors — who are very welcome, but not at the expense of locals trying to get to work or school — whizz by without even slowing.

What is wrong with this picture?

We are already in the middle of 2016 and our public transportation is still at the level of a Third World country. If something is not done now, it will be too late; 2017 will be a transportation nightmare and Bermuda will lose its vaunted reputation as a desirable holiday destination for ever.
