Protesters are not the only ones with rights

A demonstrator makes his feelings known outside Parliament

Dear Sir,

So many of us were shocked at the so-called “peaceful protest”, which ended badly last Friday. In every democracy, people have the right to protest, but peacefully.

It was no longer peaceful when access to our Parliament was blocked; hence, the reaction from the police force. I have no doubt the “peaceful protesters” were looking for this type of reaction to justify their real motives. I wonder how Bermuda now looks to the rest of the world.

I am curious. Do these protesters think they are the only people with rights in Bermuda? What about the rest of the population who were working at the time? Do they have any rights?

What about the Bermudian employers who pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in taxes? Do they have rights?

Does Chris Furbert, as head of the Bermuda Industrial Union, have any thought for the employers who give gainful employment to hundreds of his members? Do they have any rights?

Has mob rule taken over in Bermuda and is this what the new Opposition leader encourages?

The employers who collect the BIU dues should cease this practice and let the BIU do the collecting itself. This is only fair.

I was very much against the new airport scheme. However, I changed my mind after reading the proposed plan set forth by Bob Richards.

The company that intends to run the airport has such valuable experience in this field and would have contact with other international airlines. Imagine if it could persuade some new airlines to operate in and out of Bermuda? What a plus that would be for all Bermudians.

If this latest fiasco puts off future investment to Bermuda, Furbert and David Burt have a lot to answer for.
