I was improperly disenfranchised

Dear Sir,

I have to take issue with parts of the article in Wednesday’s Royal Gazette on how expats lost the vote.

The last paragraph states: “ ... the expat vote was eliminated later that year by Lord Carrington.

However, those who were previously able to vote retained that right ...”

Not true. In fact, what Lord Carrington actually stated was that only those who voted in the last election would be entitled to vote in future elections. I was on the Paget West voters list in 1976 after three years of residence.

I, and others like me, was improperly disenfranchised. I have a copy of the voters list showing my name.

The United Bermuda Party, then in government, refused to take the matter to The Hague, saying it would be too expensive.

We remained in Bermuda for 38 years and despite having permanent resident’s certificate status, we didn’t have full privileges and so my wife and I returned to Canada in 2010.

Many other PRCs have left for the same reasons, causing significant financial harm to Bermuda.

I had been very active in the captive business and to paraphrase Mr Shakespeare: “I had brought many captives home to Rome [Bermuda] whose ransom did the general coffers fill.”
