Reversing gay marriage is a veiled push for independence
It has been a long while since I wrote a Letter to the Editor, but recent events in Bermuda have compelled me to come out of my hibernation.
For the life of me, I cannot fathom why Bermuda, and in particular the Progressive Labour Party, seems hellbent on reversing the gay-marriage decision. This ridiculous notion that gay marriage breaks apart the family unit is utter nonsense.
Do you mean to tell me the LGBTQ community being able to marry is the cause of the high divorce rate of heterosexuals? Are they the cause of single mothers raising children because fathers are not present?
Family is not based upon marriage, It is based upon love. Love is what binds people together and it is love that brings two men or two women together as well to unite in marriage. If you do not agree with it, do not attend a gay wedding.
I also feel compelled to remind those who use the Bible as justification of other things that book upholds. It was the Bible that allowed — and still allows in some places — to have multiple wives, to rape a woman and it not be considered rape so long as you marry her after. It also justifies slavery.
Whites had no issue using the Bible to justify slavery and speak against interracial marriage. Did people forget that? And before I am attacked as an atheist or such, I will tell you I am far from that.
However, as a Catholic and follower of Christ, I would like to remind you He said no hateful remarks towards gays and His greatest teaching is to love one another as we wished to be loved. Period.
Even Israel, which is a Jewish faith country, allows gay marriage and Jews follow the teachings of the Old Testament — and even they acknowledged that denying gays marriage is not correct.
Last but not least, I feel this is a veiled independence push by the PLP. It wishes to revoke gay marriage — and be the first and only country backwards enough to do so — in the hopes the Governor will refuse to sign such legislation. Should he do so, it can cry and bemoan against Britain and yet again push for independence.
They are playing politics with people’s personal lives and love. Cut out the nonsense and allow people to live their lives in peace and love whom they so wish.
