Dear Sir,

We were fortunate enough to enjoy five days in Bermuda recently. We loved the beautiful scenery, lovely weather, friendly people, and amazing turquoise seas — and would love to visit again.

However, we were surprised at the lack of environmental awareness, especially for such a developed economy. There was very little recycling — not even of paper — and single-use plastics were widespread.

We particularly noticed the unthinking use of plastic bags. For instance, in one shop we bought a single fridge magnet and were made to feel peculiar because we turned down a plastic bag to carry it in.

Given that most things have to be imported on to the island, we expected a more enlightened attitude towards the use of finite resources.

Bermuda has a wealth of advantages and we urge you to add to those by engaging more actively in tackling the environmental challenges that all countries now face.
