What happened to keeping Bermuda for Bermudians?

An aerial view of the main runway

Dear Sir,

I applaud the Government’s decision to finally proceed with a solar array on the airport “finger”.

I am curious, though, that they are giving the contract to a Canadian-based firm, Saturn Power.

The Progressive Labour Party was very vocal against the building of the new airport when the One Bermuda Alliance did not have any money in government coffers, so they opted for the “sellout for the next 30 years”, to a foreign company, with expertise that might not have been in Bermuda.

I believe there is more than one solar company in Bermuda, and all of them have the expertise to do such an installation, and, like the Canadian firm, would have to import the panels, these not being produced in Bermuda.

An installation by a Bermuda company would be employing Bermudians and the profits made, would stay in Bermuda.

The lease “is in the process of being amended between the parties” and my guess is that it will be downwards, not upwards.

So much for keeping Bermuda for Bermudians, with profits staying in Bermuda! Another case of “Don’t do as I do, but do as I say.”
