More than 125 family members extending some four generations turned out in honour of Inez Wilson’s 95th birthday last month.

Without a doubt, the God-fearing mother of seven enjoyed every moment of the festivities at the Bermuda Institute auditorium on September 18.

Relatives showered her with compliments, describing her as kind, loving, energetic, brave and resilient.

There was also a delectable meal and an itinerary of events for which her daughter, Corrine Fiocca, served as master of ceremonies.

Inez was escorted into the beautifully adorned auditorium by her eldest and youngest sons Derek and Lowell as saxophonist Aaron Spencer Jr performed a rendition of To God Be the Glory / How Can I Say Thanks.

She was born on Sunday, September 18, 1921 to Horace and Mary Astwood. Inez had nine siblings.

Three of her sisters, Iris Ramsey, Myrtle Furbert and Mary Cann, were in attendance at her birthday celebrations.

A prayer of thanksgiving and praise was offered by Pastor Llewelyn Williams who travelled from Florida with his wife Cynthia, Inez’s goddaughter. Birthday greetings by family members and friends overseas were also documented and shared via a video prepared by Inez’s grandson, Quinton Butterfield III.

He also prepared a second video, which told her life through photos of her travels and celebrations with family and friends.

Ellison Adams of Barbados performed a special rendition of Happy Birthday for Inez.

The teacher explained how kind she had been to him and his family while they lived here. Salutations in absentia were offered by family members Kenneth Manders, president of the Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and Colin Dunbar, regional coordinator of the Upper Colombia Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in Spokane, Washington.

Inez’s daughter Larita Alford described her mother as a dedicated woman of God who loved her family and others unconditionally.

She said that her mother has been a dedicated member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for the past 50 years and currently attends services at the Southampton church. In her formative years, Inez was an active member of the Sanctuary Choir and often played social hostess, entertaining visiting pastors in her home.

Six of her 11 grandchildren attended her birthday celebrations. Her granddaughter, Kim Daniels, wife of senator Marc Daniels, played an instrumental part in the occasion, even drafting a crossword puzzle for it.

The television game show Family Feud also featured in the entertainment. Inez, seated in the centre of the auditorium, fielded a series of questions about her ancestral background; the audience had to answer true or false.

The event culminated with a song performed by Inez’s entire family — Inez is a Lovely Girl set to the music of her late cousin Hubert Smith’s Bermuda Is Another World.
