Kidd Clazzic’s growing up

First Prev 1 2 Next Last
On the rise: Kidd Clazzic, left, recently rocked the crowd in Trinidad at his biggest gig yet

Rapper Kidd Clazzic has his eyes on the future. The 20-year-old, who was born Jahroy Richards, opened for Alkaline at a massive concert in Trinidad & Tobago this month.

Ten years from now he wants to be in the dancehall sensation’s shoes, performing all over the world before crowds of thousands. To get there, he’s focusing on one performance at a time. He spoke with Lifestyle about his journey.

How’d you get invited to perform in Tobago?

I went to Trinidad to perform at Rehab 5, to open for Alkaline. I got there because my management team, PlayList, and my marketing team, Diplomatic Enterprises, had a connection with Ace of Spades Entertainment and Ultimate Marketing, the promoters of the show and the event.

Had you been there before?

It was my first time in Trinidad. It reminds me a lot of Bermuda. There were a lot of familiarities although it’s different.

How big a concert was it?

There were 10,000-plus people. It was massive.

Were you nervous?

We’re all human so of course I got nervous but it was good energy. It was the biggest crowd I’d ever performed for. The only crowd I’d done before that was somewhat as big was Beachfest, but this was that times ten. It was definitely a hard crowd but I did my thing enough to let them know how it is.

What did you do?

I performed a remix of Drake’s Controller and one off my new project Kidd vs Everybody — Mind of a Killer.

Is that new?

I dropped it back in October in Atlanta.

Where can we find it?

On SoundCloud under Kidd Clazzic.

What’s up next?

I have other things in the works. At the beginning of December I’ll be in Atlanta. I would say this is definitely the beginning of me getting in the door, getting things going. I’m in a good place.

I know it can’t happen overnight but I want to be doing basically what I’m doing now, but times ten: travelling the world with different performances, making music, meeting people,

Do you play any instruments?

I’ve always been into music. I play the drums. I was playing in church for the longest time, at Midland Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church. It just hit me one day. I went to a jam session and it hit me that I could make music. Drums are my main thing but I dabble in music production, beat.

Advice to anybody hoping to get started on a music career?

My advice to other young people is to just keep pushing. At the end of the day, if you want it you’ve got to go for it. Just remember that people’s opinions aren’t facts.
