‘Luxury Art’ goes on show at Masterworks

As good as gold: Carlos-Santana Dill Trott with one of his pieces

Four years ago Carlos-Santana Dill Trott quit his job so he could pursue his passion — art. Look for Luxury Art, an exhibit of the 31-year-old’s latest, at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art on Saturday.

Q: Is this your first exhibit at Masterworks? Where else have you shown your work?

A: This is my first solo exhibit at Masterworks. My first solo exhibit in Bermuda was in 2014 at The Edge, a men’s clothing store in the Washington Mall. My second solo exhibit was in 2015 at the Intermezzo Café opposite the Dame Lois Browne-Evans Building. My artwork has also been showcased in the Bermuda Society of Arts at City Hall and The Gallery at Canopious Bermuda. Some of my most popular pieces are displayed in FH Luxury Gift Store at the Hamilton Princess Hotel.

Q: You’re known for your stippling. Why did you change your style?

A: I changed my style just a bit to keep the public intrigued with my art. My urban-style lyrical piece of Bob Marley was a big hit with many people, but I wanted to show the finer side to my style of art with a combination of stippling — pictures that are created out of tiny dots — and acrylic paints.

Q: Why call it Luxury Art?

A: I gave it the title Luxury Art for two reasons: my colour choice of black and gold, for me, just stands out above the rest and I feel a sense of comfort, satisfaction and having the luxury of independence with my art. Yes, I do consider all aspects of art to be a luxury — for artists just to be able to create and that buyers will, most times, buy out of want rather than necessity.

Q: Why the suit and tie dress code for your opening?

A: Every art showcase I have I want to go bigger and better so the thought of a suit and tie themed show was just fitting for the type of art I’m showcasing — and plus, it’s at Masterworks. I’m very excited that they invited me to showcase my artwork.

Q: Were your parents big fans of the Latin American musician? Are you a fan?

A: My dad is a big Carlos Santana fan so when I was born it was just fitting. People never believe that’s my actual name until I pull out my driver’s licence. It’s actually my first name, Carlos-Santana. I love all types of music but Carlos Santana’s tunes are awesome. I tend to listen to his music when I draw. I haven’t been to a concert as of yet, but hopefully one day I will and I want to do a portrait of him and give it to him.

Q: How many pieces are on exhibit? How long did it take you to create them?

A: I will have a total of 25 pieces of art on display. It took me ever since August up until now to create my new pieces.

Q: How long will your work be on exhibit?

A: My work will be on display until February 22.

Luxury Art opens at 6pm in the Rick Faries Gallery.
