Focus on power: a still from All Governments Lie, which was shown at BUEI last night

Peter Raymont likes to joke that at 67, he’s really old.

When he started as a film-maker, a Bolex movie camera was state-of-the-art. It used 16-millimetre film and had three lens settings.

“I used them when I started out working as an editor for the National Film Board of Canada in Montreal,” said Mr Raymont, whose film Where the Universe Sings screens tonight.

Fast forward through a 45-year career, and his equipment has changed considerably.

“Now we work with beautiful ultrahigh-definition cameras,” the owner of White Pine Pictures said. “They are four times as sharp as high definition, and the cameras are actually lighter than the old 16-millimetre ones. The quality is extraordinary.”

Where the Universe Sings is about Lawren Harris, known for his stark portraits of Northern Canada.

The Canadian artist’s second wife, Bess Housser, visited before they married.

Nancy Lang, who researched for the film, is hoping to discover whether he did as well.

“It is possible, since he had several connections [and she] raved about the island,” she said. “Bess was also an artist and Masterworks has quite a few of her works.”

Ms Lang was last here with Mr Raymont a year ago. His film, Guantánamo’s Child: Omar Khadr, about a Canadian detained at Guantánamo Bay as a minor and held for ten years, screened at the BUEI then.

“After I aired it, I was stunned when a group came up to me and said they knew Omar,” Mr Raymont said.

“They’d been at Guantánamo.

“It was the Uighurs detained in Bermuda. It was amazing.”

Another film by Mr Raymont, All Governments Lie, was shown at BUEI last night.

Where the Universe Sings will screen at 6.30pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the BUEI gift shop or by calling 294-0204.
