Chris Ingham’s world is beautiful, and he loves sharing it. The photographer’s unique take on everyday scenes is now on display at Hamilton gallery Bermuda Society of the Arts.

The 41 images are shots he has taken since 2010, the first time he picked up a camera and started snapping seriously.

“My father, Harry Ingham, had a Canon Rebel EOS T1,” he said. “He knew I was artistic. He had an image in a calendar from the 70s or 80s. He showed it to me one day, gave me his camera and said, ‘See what you can do with this’.

“I started shooting and really enjoyed capturing everyday images, the things people would walk by and not necessarily see. I’m not an amazing photographer by any means — there are tons here that are — but I think I’ve got something worth showing.”

The exhibit is called This Side of the Reef. The pictures are “mostly landscape” although there are “one or two that are creative”.

“It’s all about the beauty of the island,” said Mr Ingham, 44, a catastrophe risk analyst with Sirius Bermuda.

“Inside this ring is a magical world. I love capturing it. I’m not a professional. I haven’t taken take any courses but I’ve met wonderful photographers who have given me advice and grown from there, ballooned into what I am today.”

The current solo exhibit is his second. He “jumped into” the first soon after he became interested in photography.

“After shooting a year I thought I had something but I then learnt a lot more about patience, about exploration, about finding the right time to take the picture; knowing when you haven’t got an image and when you have,” he said.

“I am always trying to offer an image or something creative that somebody hasn’t seen before. I need a release. Photography is one of my releases. I’ve got a long way to go, but I’ll get there.”

Having a competitive nature helps, he added.

“I’ve enjoyed creatively thinking and sampled most mediums out there always with the thought that I can do it better.”
