Bermuda Rentals up for sale

Tent for rent: Douglas Howe, owner of the for-sale business Bermuda Rentals, seen securing the huge tent used for the reconvening of Parliament in November last year

A long-established rental business is up for sale.

Pembroke-based Bermuda Rentals, set up more than 30 years ago by Douglas Howe, rents everything from tents and furniture to cement mixers and carpet cleaners.

Mr Howe, who is retiring, said: “The right person could come along, buy this business and invest a fair amount of time and they would really do well.”

The business has steadily diversified over the years, with an inventory that includes not only tents, but event furniture and other equipment, bouncy castles and children’s games for parties, jackhammers and generators.

Mr Howe said: “There are lots of things out there and one of the causes of Bermuda Rentals’ success is that the seasonal highs and lows only affect us marginally.”

He added the firm had been very busy in the wake of Hurricane Nicole, with dehumidifiers, blowers for drying carpets, generators and chainsaws in high demand.

And Mr Howe’s said next year’s America’s Cup could also provide a boost, with increased demand for tents and party planning as people get into the spirit of the event.

Mr Howe, a former banker, said: “They tell you when you retire from banking, you’re supposed to open up a vineyard — there weren’t any vineyards, so I opened Bermuda Rentals.”

The company, which has three full-time staff, including Mr Howe, and one part-time, is based on Serpentine Road.

Bermuda Rentals claims the largest selection of items for rent on the island on its website.

The website added: “We have been in business for over 30 years, and our success is built on two things — outstanding customer service and quality rental equipment.

“Customer satisfaction is the number one priority for everyone at Bermuda Rentals. We work together to provide each client with superior service. Our goal is to earn your business as a repeat customer.”

Anyone interested in buying the business, which was advertised in Monday’s edition of The Royal Gazette, should contact Mr Howe at bermudadoug@gmail.com.
