Fun and jobs boost as Xtreme Sports expands

Soft landings: bubble football, featuring players wearing inflatable bubbles, will be one of the wacky games at the Xtreme Sports Fun Zone at PHC Field, in Warwick

An enterprise that started as a five-minute “idea pitch” two years ago is providing summer employment for 30 students during the next three months.

And Xtreme Sports Ltd will be providing an extra choice for families looking for fun ways to keep their youngsters amused during the summer.

Every other Saturday, starting this week, the Xtreme Fun Zone will take place at PHC Field in Warwick from noon until 6pm.

The family-friendly event will feature eight inflatable games and challenges, including bubble football, wipeout, inflatable archery and a giant water slide.

It is the latest development for the business that started from scratch less than two years ago after being a winner in the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation’s Rocket Pitch competition.

Marquel Waldron, the business owner, came up with the idea for the Xtreme Sports enterprise after looking out of a train window, while travelling in England, and noticing a game of bubble football being played in a field.

He did some research on the fun sport, where players wearing inflatable bubbles compete at football.

Mr Waldron felt fun, offbeat games would work well in Bermuda, and he pitched the idea at the Rocket Pitch event in late 2015. Being judged one of the winners sent Mr Waldron on his path to establish Xtreme Sports. In April, he held his second annual Xtreme Sports Games, a corporate event where companies and organisations compete against one another at a variety of the games. The winning team then nominates the local charity to receive the $4,000 winnings.

Xtreme Sports Ltd has also held private events for groups holding their own fun days.

However, the idea of a regular family fun day is a new one.

“We will be giving it a go. It is somewhere for Bermudians to come and have a good time with multiple games and activities,” said Mr Waldron.

“We held a family fun day last October and a lot of parents were asking if we did it every week, or how often and where.

“I feel Bermuda has always wanted something like this for families.”

The nature of the games mean they can be played by all ages.

“Last year’s family fun day was great and we had a lot of good feedback.”

The success of Xtreme Sports, and the launch of the family-orientated fun zone, also means employment opportunities for Bermudians.

Mr Waldron said: “We have just hired 30 summer students to help run this.

“I’m very pleased with how things have gone. When I first had the idea I did not think I would eventually be in this position. It’s exciting to see if Bermudians will take to this.”

The Xtreme Sports Fun Zone will be every other Saturday starting this week, until September 2. All-access entry to the fun zone is $30 per person, and after that all the games are free. Admission is free for those who are only spectating.
