A trendy new retail store, Urban Little One, has opened on Front Street, and is tailored to children from newborns up to 5 years old.

The shop has a unique style and artistic flare that is designed to give customers a different experience.

It has enjoyed early success since opening its doors on July 8, and some items are being reordered having quickly sold out, according to owner Feren Trott.

When asked what inspired the idea for the children’s store, Mrs Trott said she has always been drawn to children clothes and products.

“This is something I have always wanted to do my whole life, my mom used to own a clothing store which inspired me to create my own retail store,” she said.

“I have done a lot of travelling around the world including, Mexico and Spain, and I remember always being drawn to children items. It’s just so fun and cool.”

Being a mother to a 3-year-old, she believes now is a perfect time to open such a store because she can relate to her customers.

Mrs Trott graduated from the University of Tampa with a bachelor’s degree in international business and management, but has never owned a retail space before.

She is creating something different, combining items and products such as clothing, accessories, shoes made in Amsterdam, eco-friendly diapers and wipes. Healthy snacks will be sold after Cup Match.

The store also sells diaper bags made in England, skin care products from Australia and New Zealand, tableware, hats of different styles and room design items.

“You will certainly find the words non-toxic, natural, eco-friendly, handmade, BPA-free, sustainable and ethical throughout the store,” said Mrs Trott.

Many of the products are handmade and hand-painted. Mrs Trott is also open to working and collaborating with other local product makers.

“This is my first big venture, but I have always been involved with the customer service industry by working previous jobs at several retail establishments, salons, and more recently with the bank,” she said.

Having an interest in arts herself, she designed the retail space and painted her own store logo.

She said: “I was able to use my interior design passion and design a clean and modern space. I am a creative person, so I’m always brainstorming, drawing, and researching.”

Mrs Trott believes what sets her store apart from others is the items from all over the world that are being sold.

“As Bermudians, we travel to America all the time to shop at some larger stores, like Target and Walmart. But not everyone has the opportunity to travel to Europe, Canada and South America, so I wanted to bring those styles to Bermuda.

“I wanted a physical store instead of an online store, because it is all about the experience. It creates a more personal feel, especially for families with young children. It is all about the experience.

“Most customers have commented that they feel like they are stepping into another world, which for me means mission accomplished.”

Mrs Trott has goals of eventually expanding her brand in the future, bringing in more products and moving to a bigger space.

“I would love to expand and grow, depending on the feedback I get,” she said.

Urban Little One is located at 129 Front Street. It is on instagram @urbanlittleone and has a website at https://www.urbanlittleone.com/.
