As Kim Lawrence’s spirituality grew so did her passion for crystals. She started to gain knowledge about crystals three years ago and her love for them continued so she opened the business called Zen Crystals Bda.

“Apart from my love for crystals I had a very strong intuition to open the business. The more I talked myself out of it, the stronger the push to open it became,” she said.

As talks of crystals is not very popular Ms Lawrence was hesitant to start. “I know only a few in my social circle who like crystals, and that’s as far as it went,” she added.

Taking a leap of faith, Ms Lawrence decided to open the business despite the reluctance she felt at the same time.

She collects crystals and stones, believes they have amazing energy and said she will never be caught without one.

When asked what inspired the name “Zen” she replied: “My cat’s name is Zen, my family adopted her last August from the SPCA.

“When she came in the house, it was like she was instantly at home. Like she had lived with us from birth. She brought a very peaceful energy with her.

“That’s when I decided to name her Zen because her calm demeanour. I find crystals provide the same energy to many people, and when I said the name Zen Crystals to myself, it fit.”

Besides giving off good energy, she said the crystals do many other things for individuals both spiritually and physically.

“They can be used as a tool to help one become more grounded, centred, or empowered,” she said.

“It’s very hard to put into words a good explanation about crystals as it’s more of a personal experience.

“You and I may hold the exact same crystal and you may not feel any difference but I may hold the same crystal and feel its vibration.”

Ms Lawrence said she seen people have intentions of getting something specific but a different crystal keeps catching their eye.

“They ask what the properties of that particular crystal are and once they find out, they understand why the crystal was calling to them as they have different meanings.”

Crystals can be chosen differently, some by sight and others by the energy that draws a person.

“I highly recommend for people to touch and feel crystals especially if you are not very familiar with them,” Ms Lawrence said.

“Some can just look at a crystal from a picture and know the crystal is for them. You have a few people drawn to a crystal because of its sparkle or colour but usually the energy of the crystal attracts its owner.”

When opening the business she was not sure who would show interest in crystals, but she said people from all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities on the island are interested in crystals and natural stones.

Zen Crystals uses social media as her store, benefiting from its reach.

“The items available are of good quality, I believe variety is important especially for those that are really into crystals, and as there is no store front it allows us to offer reasonable prices,” Ms Lawrence said.

The crystals and natural stones range from $4 up to $100 and Zen will look to have larger pieces coming in by October.

The company, based on Chaingate Hill, Devonshire, has a deadline of 11pm for next-day orders. Opening hours are on Saturdays from 10am to 12:30pm, reopening on Saturday evenings from 6pm to 8pm, if requested by customers.
