Jeweller Kirk Stapff is to open a workshop to take on jewellery repairs and special orders.

Mr Stapff must vacate the Kirk’s Jewellery Design and Repairs store in Butterfield Place shopping concourse on Friday after landlords Butterfield Bank gave him one month’s notice.

A jeweller for 43 years, self-employed Mr Stapff has operated from that location since 1998.

The veteran jeweller said he will operate a pick-up and delivery service for repair work, but will not be advertising the workshop location.

Mr Stapff said the workshop will be operational by mid-June.

“I am keeping the same telephone number so people can contact me,” he says. “I can come to you, or we can meet somewhere, or whatever you want to do.”

Mr Stapff said a Hamilton jewellery store has contacted him with a view to outsourcing its jewellery repair work.

“Repair work is unbelievable,” he said. “You can make $200 or $300 a day on repair work alone.

“Retail was a very small part of the business. Ninety per cent was repairs and special orders.”

Clients continue to contact him with special orders, says Mr Stapff, who specialises in one-of-a-kind jewellery designs and precious stones.

“I am working on a couple of engagement rings already.”

Meanwhile, a clearance sale continues until Friday with discounts of 25 to 50 per cent.

“I wish I had a going out of business sale every month,” Mr Stapff said.

“I have been doing really good — I am actually selling things.”
