Lopes shows plenty of promise

Kneesy does it: Lopes produced a string of strong showings at the Rubis Southside Raceway

Aiden Lopes was dominant on the fourth race day of the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club’s Circuit Racing Championship at the Rubis Southside Raceway at the weekend.

Newcomer Lopes, 13, won two out of three races in the Minibike Senior category, while Nathaniel Binega-Northcott, 14, stole the final first in the last heat of the day.

Seven-year-old Aeziah Divine, who held off Binega-Northcott for much of the minibike race, won the junior category. The scooters were the main highlight of the day’s events with a full race grid comprised of Formula and Scooter 70s. Nasaje Anderson created a lengthy lead over his competitors early in the race, including a strong battle against CJ Richardson, of the Formula Open class, who ran his GP150 alongside the scooters.

During the second heat of the day, with Anderson holding another comfortable lead, track traffic created ideal conditions for an accident that resulted in a red flag being drawn after the lead rider came off his bike and was unable to complete the remainder of his races.

Several pairs battled it out over the course of the day including Cleve Wilson, who made his return to the sport this month on his Scooter 70, going up against Sandy Richardson on his 250cc Supermoto.

Ricky Wade, Jason Pacheco and Phillip Woolridge helped draw the crowds with their skill and stamina throughout the afternoon. Wade, a mechanic by trade, has raced with the BMRC for the past 15 years, while Woolridge is the BMRC’s most recent rider to return to the grid, stepping in after an eight-year break to fill in for Marcus Pimentel after an road traffic collision.

The next race day is scheduled for Sunday, August 20. Entry is free.
