Bid to turn post office into shop

Planning proposal: for a shop at Somerset Bridge Post Office (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

The Somerset Bridge Post Office could be reopened as a small refreshment shop.

Planning documents propose that the majority of the building be turned into a business selling hot and cold drinks, packaged snacks and home-made baked goods.

Mailboxes would remain on the site, which would include a tourist information centre. While the main business would operate under limited hours, customers would be able to access mailboxes 24 hours a day.

A section of the application states: “The Bridge Trading Post expects to benefit from the historic and nostalgic value of the infamous Somerset Bridge having acquired the status of being the smallest drawbridge in the world, at a picturesque location and convenient respite for both residents and tourists.

“The business concept is a variation on the theme of the village post office, introduced by the US Postal Service in July 2011. The overall management of TBTP will be the responsibility of the sole proprietor.

“While the staffing model in the first year will involve the assistance of family members on a gratuitous basis, we expect to hire two part-time staff members in the second year of operation.”
