Bermuda College students study Trunk Island

Bermuda College students received a hands-on learning experience on Trunk Island, with the assistance of the Bermuda Zoological Society.

Students in the Introduction to Biology course visited BZS’s “living classroom” on April 1 and 8, exploring the life on the island and in the surrounding waters of Harrington Sound.

Jamie Bacon, educational officer for BZS, said it was a positive experience to get the students out doing field work on the island.

“They were very enthusiastic and I think we’ll see some interesting results when they collate and present their data,” Dr Bacon said. “My team and I are very much looking forward to working with the College’s Introductory Biology students each semester.

“This will give them and us the opportunity to collect some meaningful ecological data while they are getting hands-on experience in ecological sampling techniques.”

Teacher Alnisha Simmons meanwhile thanked the BZS for their assistance, saying: “It was a fabulous two weeks and the students really grasped everything. They had a wonderful time exploring the marine ecosystems and reviewing invertebrates.

“They also had a great time doing field work comparing Surinam cherry and Bermuda palmetto forests on the island, which is a fantastic living classroom.”
