Are you ready for a storm?

While the 2016 Hurricane Season is still more than a month away, it is always good to be prepared for the threat of storms.

In advance of a hurricane, the public are advised to stock up on drinking water, canned goods, non-perishable food items and a manual can opener.

Residents should also make sure they have a household fire extinguisher, a working radio and flashlights, along with enough batteries to operate both.

When a storm is approaching, the public should make sure they have an adequate supply of any prescription drugs.

Outdoor objects should be brought indoors or secured and windows should be shuttered or boarded up.

The public should also fill their bathtubs to ensure there is water to flush the toilet, and downpipes on Bermuda roofs should be plugged to prevent salt water contamination of the water tank.

During a storm, the public should listen to the Government Emergency Broadcast Station on FM100.1 MHz for updates.

Stay away from windows and sliding glass doors and it is also recommended to keep one window on the leeward side of the building a few inches open.

Once the storm has passed, the public should clear their driveways and streets — unless there are downed power lines in the area — check on any elderly neighbours and continue to listen to the radio for further updates.
