The island’s state-of-the-art CCTV system was put through its paces this afternoon under the watchful eye of Michael Dunkley.

The Premier’s visit came just hours after two suspected robbers who held up the Gem Cellar in Hamilton at gunpoint were caught on security cameras in the Walker Arcade.

Mr Dunkley, who was accompanied by senator Jeff Baron, were given a run down on how the recently expanded network of cameras helped police fight crime by operators and Superintendent James Howard.

Mr Howard provided the pair with an operational overview of the system as well as its features and functions.

“The use of technology in the prevention and investigation of crime is a critical tool for law enforcement,” said Mr Dunkley.

“The CCTV network uses the 150 cameras in support of the hard work of the men and women of the BPS and like them it is a 24/7 operation that continues to prove a sound investment. The public can feel confident that the cameras are well sited, well maintained and used to support the BPS in their public safety role.”

Mr Dunkley maintained that the Bermuda Government remained committed to “providing the infrastructure support needed to enhance the work of the police”.

He added: “The planned expansion of the network into Dockyard and St. George’s will further strengthen the security of those areas of local and tourist activity.”
