A generous reinsurance firm has donated $10,000 to a vital feeding programme that helps provide meals for more than 100 hungry residents every week.

Members of Global Atlantic Re Ltd presented the cheque to Pastor Sydney Gibbons from the Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist Church yesterday at the firm’s headquarters on Par-la-Ville Road in Hamilton.

The church’s feeding programme, which provides meals for 140 people per week, has been running for 30 years.

Dr Gibbons told The Royal Gazette that the donation “makes the difference between some people having a meal or not”.

“We see people from all different levels of the community from people living on the streets to people who are established in the community and certain challenges have brought about this need.

“A regular staff of five to seven church members and five to seven students from Bermuda Institute help with the programme to make a difference in the quality of life of people who are challenged by life circumstances.”

The weekly feeding programme takes place at the Adventist Youth Centre on King Street in Hamilton on Wednesday evenings between 5.30pm and 6.30pm and on Sunday between 4pm and 5pm.

April Galda, co-CEO of Global Atlantic Re, added: “We are big believers that the business community gives back to the people of Bermuda.”

“We felt we had a responsibility to help the community and the issue of hunger rose very high in our mind. Our COO Kymn Astwood is a member of the Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist Church and we collectively as a group decided that this was a great cause.”
