Three Bermuda High School students have taken to the skies after winning an aviation-themed writing contest.

Abigail Brewer and Alexandra Quinn-Sierra, both 13, and Olivia Taylor, 14, enjoyed a bird’s-eye view of the island on Saturday afternoon with aerial tour company Blue Sky Flights.

Abigail won her spot aboard the Cessna 172 after submitting an essay on her great-uncle, who was a fighter pilot in the Second World War.

Alexandra penned a creative piece, imagining what it would be like to witness Bermuda from above, while Olivia made a poster showcasing both her artistic and writing talents.

After learning all about the small plane and how it works, the girls headed out on their private flight from St David’s with Blue Sky Flights pilot and manager Heather Nicholds.

As well as flying over the houses of all three teenagers for an aerial view, Ms Nicholds took them to see the South Shore, Front Street and Bermuda High School.

“The flight went really well and the girls seemed to really enjoy it,” she told The Royal Gazette.

“Bermuda looks totally different from above, and they liked seeing how things flowed together.”

Ms Nicholds added that she would like to offer more plane rides as competition prizes, to help stoke young people’s interest in aviation and allow them to try something “out of the box”.
