Community groups have reaped $140,000 in cash seized from criminal proceeds.

Nine groups benefited in the third instalment of a programme started by the Bermuda Government in November 2014, Cash Back for Communities.

They ranged from neighbourhood institutions to entities that work with families in promoting positive life choices, Senator Jeff Baron, the Minister of National Security, said.

Care Learning Centre, with $15,000, will help young students to tackle new exams for their GED qualifications, while Family Centre, awarded a $50,000 grant, will cover its high-cost counselling services.

Crime Stoppers Bermuda, described by member David Carruthers as the island’s best-kept secret, will apply its $10,000 towards marketing its confidential hotline, 800-8477, while the Bermuda Pacers Track Club will use a same-sized donation for its continued promotion of athletics.

Also receiving $10,000 were the North Village Community Club, Western Stars Sports Club, Pembroke Hamilton Club and Troika Bermuda, which invests in creative outlets for young people as alternatives to antisocial behaviour. Lorraine Rest Home took a pledge of $15,000.

“These men and women sacrifice countless hours to train, nurture and care for young people, seniors and families,” Mr Baron said.
