Gridlock road rage ‘is aimed unfairly’

The work on Harbour Road, which was part of a perfect storm that caused traffic congestion at the weekend

Road rage has been aimed unfairly at Island Construction over gridlock caused by other jobs on Harbour Road, according to the company’s senior vice-president.

Signs have been pulled down and workers denounced by angry motorists, Allan DeSilva told The Royal Gazette — adding that much of the snarled traffic had “nothing to do with our job”.

“A lot of the problems were caused by other jobs that didn’t do their homework,” Mr DeSilva said, after key stretches of main roads were brought to a standstill over the weekend.

Months of planning went into the job at 104 Harbour Road, where the removal of an unstable roof off a listed house meant detours in case of a collapse.

The job could take three weeks in total, but has been complicated by works nearby undertaken by other companies, he said. “People have a right to be mad about it.

“I can understand the frustration.

“But the verbal abuse at times is almost unbearable.

“One guy drove down to the site and almost got in a physical altercation.”

Other projects “piggybacked” on Island Construction’s road restrictions, he said: one trenching job in particular, but also the laying of asphalt on Monday, and the decision by Belco to pull cable on Sunday.

“Mayhem” on the road resulted in cars running red lights, and even a set of detour signs getting tossed over a wall.

“I don’t want Island Construction’s name to get dragged through social media when we were the ones who had our permit and everything else organised,” Mr DeSilva said.

“I just want to assure the general public that we did all our homework, and please just exercise a little patience.”
