One hundred and seventeen graduates and their friends and families took to the Heritage Worship Centre in Hamilton on Monday morning for the 2016 Berkeley Institute graduation ceremony.

They were celebrated and honoured for their achievements with the presentation of diplomas, special awards and scholarships.

Among those who attended was Michael Dunkley, the Premier, former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith, Speaker of the House of Assembly Randolph Horton and Shadow Minister of Education and training, and Opposition Whip, Lovitta Foggo.

Dr Phyllis Curtis-Tweed, principal of Berkeley, said: “Graduating from senior school is an important attainment. It also marks a new beginning as our graduates go off into that wide, cold world, and what a world.”

She provided encouragement to the political leaders that were present, saying that they are “nothing short of brave to be in positions of political leadership at this time”. “Our Government leaders must work with educators and community partners to develop effective plans, strategic plans, that accommodate all age ranges, education levels that address barriers and benchmarks to success, aligned with specific action. And yes, we also need the funding to achieve our goals.”

Valedictorian and head boy Kyrsten Burrows addressed the class of 2016 followed by the commencement speech made by the guest of honour, Jubilee Edness, a graduate from the class of 2010.

Also remembered were fallen classmates Shijuan Mungal and Arai Joell-Johnstone, who lost their lives in tragic events. Speaking of the teachers, Dr Curtis-Tweed described them as being “committed and second to none”, stating that as long as they work together as a team, they can “fulfil the vision of what we can become”.

She added: “So Berkeley graduates, off you go into that wide, cold world, what a world.

“The challenges are all there for you, but you’re ready, you’re intelligent, you’re talented, have great potential, you know how to persevere and you have a great sustaining sense of community.

“You are leaders, you are grounded and anchored in faith, you have the love of your principal, your teachers, your parents, your family and your friends.

“You can do anything that you set as a goal.

“Take hold of the legacy that we are handing to you and pay it forward. Why? Because you are Berkeleyites.”
