Accident hotspot to be resurfaced, says Government

Call for action: Everett Gibson can recall one too many major accidents right on his doorstep because of this crazy corner in Southampton (Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

A stretch of Middle Road in Southampton that residents have described as a hotspot for accidents is due to be resurfaced, the Ministry of Public Works has revealed.

However, a Bermuda Government spokeswoman said that the timing of the work was dependant on a Belco review of whether major upgrades needed to be done to electricity cables in the area.

The statement comes after a serious car accident on the bend, near the dock by St John’s Place, that left a woman in the Intensive Care Unit and another man in hospital.

The female passenger remains in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, although she has been moved to a general ward where she is recovering from her injuries suffered on June 28.

Local resident, Everett Gibson, told The Royal Gazette that three cars had ended up in his yard after drivers lost control of their vehicles on the dangerous bend. The 69-year-old former Reserve Police officer said the road surface was crumbling away and claimed his attempts to contact the Government and address the problem had fallen on deaf ears. In response to the claims a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Public Works said: “We respond to reports of potholes and urgent road defects as soon as they are reported and at this time we have no information to suggest that the condition of the road surface was a contributory factor to this unfortunate incident, but we shall discuss this with the Police following the completion of their investigation and take any appropriate action.

“However, the section of Middle Road west of its junction with Lighthouse Road has been noted for future resurfacing.

“The timing of the resurfacing work is dependent on whether major upgrade work is needed to electricity cables in Middle Road, which is currently under investigation by Belco.”
