Planning permission granted

Planning granted: permission has been given to build holiday homes in Old Maid's Lane, St Georges

A proposal to build vacation rental units on an empty plot of land in St George’s has been given planning approval.

The application, submitted by PJ Designs, sought to erect eight single-bedroom, self-catering units on the Old Maid’s Lane property, along with an office, a small pool and a hot tub.

The site would also feature 17 motorcycle parking spaces to accommodate rented cycles for guests, but no car spaces.

According to the minutes of the June 22 meeting of the Development Application’s Board, the technical officer noted that while the property was generally large and level, it was only accessible through a 6ft pedestrian right of way.

“Additionally, access to the property in general is also difficult for large taxis along the narrow Old Maid’s Lane that serves the site,” the minutes stated.

“The technical officer informed the board that guests renting the units would gain access to the property from the public road via a golf cart.”

The board questioned the accessibility of the site, particularly for emergency vehicles like fire trucks or ambulances.

“Technical officers indicated that emergency vehicles would be able to access the property from the St George’s Club property over Secretary Lane and along Old Maid’s Lane,” the minutes continued.

“Additionally, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Services would be required to sign-off the building permit application before the permit was issued.”

After considering the circumstances, the board resolved to approve the application.
